Albert E. Barnett, MD is Chairman of the Board and Chief Medical Officer of the Institute for Healthcare Advancement. He is a nationally recognized expert on healthcare delivery models. Dr. Barnett founded Friendly Hills Medical Group in 1968 and served as the CEO of Friendly Hills HealthCare Network until 1996. During this time, he helped to build one of the most esteemed physician-led healthcare delivery systems in the U.S. A respected author and lecturer, Dr. Barnett consults on an extensive variety of healthcare issues and has written or contributed to six books on the delivery of healthcare.
 
Gloria Gilbert Mayer, RN, EdD, FAAN is the President and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Advancement.  Before joining IHA, Dr. Mayer was the COO of Friendly Hills Healthcare Network, a large managed care organization serving 400,000 members.  Dr. Mayer has extensive journal publications and 11 published books. Dr. Mayer is the co-author of 4 of the books in the "What To Do For Health" book series.

S. Eric Anderson, Ph.D, MBA, has presented dozens of research studies for professional conferences, authored books and written numerous academic as well as professional articles. He was selected to serve on the Academic Medicine and Managed Care Forum and the Academic Medicine and Health Industry Forum, a research initiative committed to engaging leaders across the healthcare community sponsored by the Council on US Health Care. Dr. Anderson has also traveled to 147 countries and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for dozens of global development projects . 
 
John Applen, MD has served as a member of the board of directors of the Institute for Healthcare Advancement since its incorporation in 1994. As a physician and surgeon, Dr. Applen has had over 40 years of experience practicing in various healthcare settings throughout the U.S.
  

Juan M. Garcia has been actively involved in community issues for several years and held the office of Mayor of the City of La Habra, California in 1999. He is currently employed as Business Coordinator for the Chevron Petroleum Technology Company.

  

George S. Goldstein, PhD is Executive Vice President of Molina Healthcare, Inc., an HMO serving California, Washington, Utah, New Mexico, Indiana, Ohio, Texas, and Michigan. Previously, Dr. Goldstein held several senior positions in healthcare in both public and private sectors, in the U.S. and other countries. Dr. Goldstein has published extensively on numerous healthcare topics.

  

Nancy J. Monk, MPH, MBA brings a wealth of experience in healthcare systems management to the Board. She is the Vice President of Public and Regulatory Affairs at PacifiCare Health Systems in Cypress, Calif., where she has served for the past 10 years. Nancy has drawn accolades for her work in managed care and policy development, and continues to lead with her experience in strategic planning, government relations and leadership training and development. She earned her two masters' degrees from UCLA's School of Public Health and Graduate School of Management, and remains active academically as a member of the Masters in Health Administration Advisory Board at CSU Long Beach.

  

Barbara Price is Vice President, Project Management with Scripps Health in San Diego, California. She has over twenty years of experience in healthcare delivery systems and health plan operations. Ms. Price currently consults with corporate and business unit leadership to provide content expertise and advice on clinical and business process performance change and improvement.

 

Duane Saikami, PharmD, MBA, is a partner in PharMedQuest, a consulting firm that works with pharmaceutical manufacturers, health insurance companies, physician organizations, and health care entities to develop managed pharmaceutical care strategies and tactics.  Previously, Dr. Saikami was the Vice President of Market Capability Development for Merck-Medco Managed Care, now Medco Health Solutions.  Dr. Saikami received his Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration from California State University Long Beach.

IHA Executive Staff    
 
Michael Villaire, MSLM, Chief Operating Officer, joined IHA in 2000. He is accountable for daily operations of IHA.  He coordinates health literacy activities for IHA, which includes planning and production of IHA's annual Health Literacy Conference and the Health Literacy Rewrite/Redesign Service. Prior to working at IHA, he served as managing editor for a number of peer-reviewed medical and nursing journals, and has produced national healthcare symposia. He earned baccalaureate degrees in English and Communications from Western Michigan University, and his master's degree in nonprofit organizational leadership and management from the University of La Verne.

Marian Ryan, PhD, MPH, CHES, Executive Director, Research & Development, joined IHA in 2010. Dr. Ryan served as the Corporate Director for Disease Management and Health Education for Molina Healthcare, Inc. She directed health education and patient education programs for a large integrated medical group and the County of Orange Health Care Agency.  Additionally, Dr. Ryan worked clinically for eight years as a pediatric/neonatal respiratory therapist in a tertiary hospital in southern California. Dr. Ryan successfully defended her doctoral dissertation December 2009 at Brandeis University, MA and worked as a senior researcher for the Schneider Institutes for Health Policy at Brandeis.
