CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
The Institute for Healthcare Advancement's
Eighth Annual Health Literacy Conference
"Health Literacy: Bridging Research and Practice"
Deadline for Submissions: November 15, 2008
The Institute for Healthcare Advancement is issuing a Call for Breakout Session Presentations for its Eighth Annual Health Literacy Conference, "Health Literacy: Bridging Research and Practice." The conference will be held on May 7-8, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine, California.

Breakout sessions are offered to attendees to provide hands-on, interactive instruction on topics related to health literacy. Sessions last 90 minutes and are presented twice in one day, once in the morning and again in the afternoon. Speakers are provided an honorarium, hotel accommodations, airfare (outside the greater LA/Orange County area), and complimentary conference registration.
Topics
We are particularly interested in receiving Breakout Session presentations on these topics:
- Cultural competency related to health literacy
- Communicating with LEP (limited English proficiency) clients
- Communicating healthcare information in other languages
- Testing and evaluating education materials
- Visual design and comprehension
- Education program design
- Making a business case for implementing health literacy solutions
- Specific models in health literacy that can be replicated
- Other health literacy-related topics focused on providing skills or tools
Evaluation
Breakout Session presentations will be evaluated upon how well they meet the following guidelines:
- Session provides usable information addressing an area related to health literacy and teaches attendees a skill or provides a tool they can use in their daily practice
- Focuses on specific skills needed by educators, clinicians, and others in providing information and care to patients in a clinical or educational environment
- Uses a hands-on, skill-building approach
- Has 3 clear learning objectives
Audience
Previous attendees to IHA's Annual Health Literacy Conference have comprised a mixed group of physicians, nurses, health educators, pharmacists, administrators, researchers, writers, program specialists, academics, and others in healthcare. Continuing education credits are offered for all sessions so submissions must include learning objectives.
Those interested in submitting a presentation must fill out the online application below. Incomplete submissions will not be considered.
General Submission Guidelines
- Presentations should describe original work.
- An individual may submit more than one presentation.
- The submitter is strongly encouraged to compose the abstract text in his/her own word processor before submitting it online. Be sure to check spelling, word count, and conformance with the guidelines given above.
