La Habra, Calif. - June 8, 2004 - Volunteers are needed to help at the Friends of Children Health Center, a clinic that provides free and low cost medical and dental services to uninsured children. The clinic is located on the grounds of Las Lomas Elementary School in La Habra and is open six days a week, Monday through Saturday, year-round.
A variety of volunteer opportunities are available, including working in the reception area, providing clerical and clinical assistance, reading to or interacting with children, and community outreach. The clinical staff mentors volunteers to help identify their talents and train them to serve a community in need. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older, have a desire to work in a health care environment and a love for children. Previous volunteer experience is preferred but not required.
“We welcome everyone, from teenagers looking for an interesting summer activity, to retirees who would like some social interaction in the mornings or the afternoons,” says Judi Leonard, pediatric nurse practitioner who coordinates the medical services provided at the center. “We also encourage parents, teachers, librarians, and college students to offer their time once a week to volunteer in our literacy program.”
The Center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, Mondays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Persons interested in volunteering can call Miriam Escovar at (714) 447-3460, Ext. 203.
